About

Perfect Fandom is blog dedicated to the study of fans and fandom. In particular I am interested in the ways that fans pursue the subject of their fandom and the mechanisms behind that passion.

I started writing about fandom in 2014 as part of class project which resulted in a 6,000 word article about the University of Iowa's science-fiction and fan-fiction collections. Part of that research was an interview with Peter Balestrieri, who is the Curator of Science Fiction and & Popular Culture at the University of Iowa, who defined a fans as, anyone who create things like costumes, props, or writings, participates events, is active in a specific community, or engages in any other activity that goes beyond simple consumption.

After the article was finished I started seeing examples of fans and their fandoms everywhere and felt compelled to write about them as well. So far I have written about tribute bands, drivers who prefer standard over automatic transmissions, and am currently working on a story about reenactments. I am always on the look out for the lesser known places that fans congregate.

This blog has several goals:
1. It's a way for me to organize and share the fandom related articles, blog posts, books, pictures, and videos that I find in the course of my research.

2. Posting tidbits about the research that I am doing about a particular subject or current projects.

3. Publishing my thoughts and observations about the human mechanisms that makes fandom work.

4. Finally, connecting with fans from every fandom.
